A long, long time ago in a galaxy not-so-far-away, There was a little Cable network called ZDTV. I discovered at TV Show called “The Screen Savers” with an over-enthusiastic geek named Leo Laporte, and some geeky chick who’s name slips my mind right now. (Kate?) The show was called “The Screen Savers” and it was the best shows about technology on TV. After some time the cast grew, and others joined Leo. Kate (I’m not sure if that was her name, my memory is failing me in my old age) was replaced, and Leo’s sidekick on the daily show turned into a rotating spot between 3 or 4 different people. The show was always good full of tech tips and information, and I even learned some things occasionally (GASP!).
The TV Network changed it’s name to TechTV. TSS, as the show came to be known, thrived. The network was awesome and only getting better… and then all hell broke loose.
TechTV was bought out by a Network devoted to video gaming called G4. I had watched G4 every once in awhile, as they had some good shows about retro-gaming and the like. The problem with G4 was that it seemed as if everything was recorded and broadcast out of some guy’s basement. G4 basically fired most of TSS Staff (It’s a bit more complicated than that, some left, others were sent home), Patrick Norton, a guy I respect because he’ll wear a kilt on national TV took over the show in Leo’s spot (he used to be one of Leo’s rotating sidekicks), and he was joined by .. er .. someone else who’s name slipped my mind.
The show went downhill. I refused to watch it, as it’s quality was nowhere near what I had come to expect. the new G4TechTV had utterly ruined my show. Recently, they pulled the last straw. The changed the name of “The Screen Savers” to “Attack of the Show”
…
I’ve heard of some stupid names for TV Shows, but that really takes the cake.
But in every dark cloud, there’s a silver lining.
Leo, along with Patrick, Kevin, and some others have Returned via Podcast. Leo has been kind enough convert the mp3pro file to standard mp3, and of course, the geek’s audio format, Ogg Vorbis. The first 2 Episodes are available on Leo’s blog, and should continue to be posted there weekly. They were going to call the show “Revenge of the Screen Savers” but G4TechTV put the kibosh on that.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to any of it, but if it slows down enough at work here tonight, I already have the first episode. I’ll definitely be listening at home ![]()

w00t! Leo was talking about this on his weekly radio show (KFI) this saturday =) I was so stoked to hear that they did this! I haven’t had time to go download it, but I will
BTW: You can get on IRC with Leo during his show on Saturday 11am-2pm. Leo is the man, and so is Patrick. And, wasn’t it Patrick that wore the kilt, not Kevin? Kevin Rose is lame, imho. But TheBroken.org was cool for a while. The videos are funny.
