As some of you know, I’m going back to school.
Not in the traditional sense either. I’m attending, for the second time, an Online School. I tried my hand at the University of Phoenix, the one that you see ads for everywhere, and had a bad experience there (that’s a whole different story). So around May I got a phone call from Rebecca at Colorado Technical University. I applied there, got accepted, got my student loan worked out, and was told I was supposed to start classes on the 3rd. CTU had me enrolled in their IT program. When the 1st rolled around, and I was supposed to be able to log in to check my classes they weren’t there. I then looked over my classes. Most of them were business courses, E-business, Marketing, Ethics, etc. Out of my whole schedule There were 5 basic IT classes.
So, I called Rebecca and asked her about it, within 3 hours I had my entire schedule rearranged and I was switched over to Software Engineering. I had my classes set up, and I could log in.
So, I check and see my first two classes: Networking Concepts (”That’s simple enough,” I thought), and College Algebra.
College Algebra.
I last took Algebra in 9th grade and I didn’t do so hot. Not because I didn’t understand it, but because I just didn’t care. 9th grade was probably the worst year of my entire education, but we won’t get into that either. Needless to say, I don’t remember any of it. I did great in my math classes that followed after I switched schools (had something to do with the 9th-grade issues..), but still not great in school because I was just so damn bored.
So, I get to struggle with a class that should come to people like me easily. I should know basic algebra without having to look everything up, but I don’t. Hell, Physics came easily to me, Electronics .. also easily. It’s just Algebra that I struggle with. The formulas and calculations in those classes were simple, and they were all algebraic equations. So why can’t I seem to get my head around raw algebra? Probably because I don’t see what the point is. Throw some numbers and letters at me without a reason of why I’m calculating this, I lose interest.
As I said, it’s only a month, I’ll get through it … then on to “Web Pubishing” and “Problem Solving with Programming”.
