According to a Reuters Article Daylight Savings Time’s 3 week head start has had no noticeable effect on power consumption. Apparently the only thing it did to was to give a lot of crackberry addicts and computer users headaches and moments of blind panic as their clocks and watches toyed with their fragile, business-minded emotions. In fact, a friend of mine over at LivingWithStyle decided that it was a wonderful April Fool’s Joke from Congress, as April 1st is the day the clocks would have originally sprung forward.
I’m guessing that the energy expended as computer programmers and users burned the midnight oil to make sure their programs and computers weren’t going to die in a fiery inferno due to the lack of not knowing what time it was is far greater than any possible energy saved by waking up and dragging their sorry asses to work in the morning an hour early.
So, now the question is, does congress drop the new DST to go back to the old next year after they finally realized it doesn’t work? This, of course, would cause the same panic and havoc next year, as computer programmers attempt to roll back their patches that they had to write this year. Or, do they keep it going, thus saving some businesses money?
The best idea is to make the temporary bill permanent in my opinion. However, knowing congress, they’ll find a way to muck it up.
